In-Ho | Paper | Possibilities and Limitations of Gifted Education in Korea: An Ethnographic Study
| Presenters |
Han, Ki-soon; Park, In-ho; Yang, Tae-youn; University of Incheon, Korea |
| Abstract |
What is the meaning of giftedness and gifted education? What are the effects of gifted programs? These are the main questions of the present qualitative study. For this ethnographic study, the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) science gifted education center in Korea was observed for six months. Ten professors and 50 students were interviewed. Results showed that ISEP science center provides a differentiated learning environment and differentiated teaching methods. Students improved their thinking skills, creative problem-solving ability, and positive self-esteem through the programs. In addition, formation of human networks, special meaning of the gifted label, and the acquisition of personal knowledge were achieved. Unfortunately, some professors’ low motivation, absence of individualized plans, and bureaucratic management weakened students’ task commitment. The lack of opportunity for student social activities are limitations of the ISEP gifted education center. |

Irvine | Workshop | The Learning Retreat: An Innovative Way of Nurturing Talent and Unlocking Potential
| Presenters |
Irvine, Mary I. University of Waikato, New Zealand |
| Abstract |
The Learning Retreat (TLR) has become a feature of gifted and talented programs in the Waikato region of New Zealand and is recognized as a powerful catalyst for nurturing talent and unlocking potential. TLR is based on George Betts’ Autonomous Learner Model (1996). Time away from the school environment with like-minded peers offers an opportunity for students with special abilities to develop positive self-concepts and self-esteem, develop an understanding of what it means to have special gifts and talents, accept the responsibilities associated with these gifts and talents, and grow in understanding of themselves and their place in the world. This workshop will lead participants through the planning stages of a Learning Retreat where activities are matched to the guiding principles that underpin the retreat. Experiences of some New Zealand secondary schools will be used as examples. Relevant material will be shared with participants. |

Israelashvili | Paper | A Longitudinal Evaluation of an Intervention to Foster Adolescents’ Academic Motivation
| Presenters |
Israelashvili, Moshe; Addi-Raccah, Audrey. School of Education, Tel Aviv University, Israel |
| Abstract |
Based upon their above-average IQ scores, junior-high-school students living in the disadvantaged suburbs of Tel Aviv-Jaffa were selected to participate in a program for fostering academic motivation. The general aim of the program was to motivate this upper quintile of students to pursue higher education, rather than to go to work. The current study was conducted over 25 years and the participant students were in their late 30s when the study began. The findings clearly indicate that project participants had an advantage over non-participants, both in job prestige and level of income. This advantage persists even after controlling for gender, IQ scores, and level of education. Thus, exposure to the intervention blurred the differences in levels of ability and has empowered all the participants to pursue higher education. Reflections on theories of social justice and resilience, as well as implications on interventions among gifted children, will be elaborated and discussed. |
