Easter | Paper | Future Directions for Gifted and Talented Learners in New Zealand Schools

| Abstract |
Over the past decade, a range of national policy initiatives has been implemented to improve learning outcomes for gifted and talented students in New Zealand schools. A comprehensive review of gifted education provision is currently being undertaken by the Ministry of Education to identify future priorities for government funding. This paper will draw on evidence from the review, as well as data from a recent national evaluation of schools carried out by the Education Review Office (ERO, 2008) to consider what has been achieved so far—the challenges and successes. Key findings from the research will be discussed, including the critical importance of developing high-quality teacher professional learning programs to build the capacity of schools to cater more effectively for gifted and talented learners in regular classroom settings. |

Edmunds | Paper | A Longitudinal Analysis of Highly Precocious Writing

| Abstract |
Literature addressing gifted children is replete with case studies of highly precocious behavior. Historically, the extant cases are predominated by precocity in closed-symbol systems, such as mathematics and music. There are very few instances of adult-like mastery within non-closed systems, like literary production and verbal intelligence. While prodigies are rare, precocious literary expertise before age six is rarer. This paper outlines our ongoing, seven-year, longitudinal study of a precocious, five-year-old child writer, whose work is both prolific and sophisticated. Our presentation will demonstrate how conceptual models of giftedness did not completely depict precocious writing or precocious writers and how existing writing-analyses frameworks were less than adequate. These realizations led to a new synthetic-analytic framework for precocious writing (Noel and Edmunds, 2007). Using this framework, we will present new analyses of the child’s later works, examine modifications to our original framework, and demonstrate how educators can design better programs for highly capable writers. |

Ellis | Paper | What Do I Want to Be When I Grow Up?

| Abstract |
While some gifted children focus on career goals very early, the answer to this question is not always obvious to many highly-able late adolescents and early adults. Those who have not yet crystallized their identities may have difficulty selecting fields of study because they really could do anything. Everything seems interesting and inviting. Some students are paralyzed by the conflict of choosing particular career paths because, by doing so, they seemingly will eliminate from their lives other paths that they enjoy and at which they excel. This presentation will focus on applications of the Curriculum of Identity from NAGC’s Parallel Curriculum model as a way of addressing the dilemma of being good at everything. By including the Curriculum of Identity in the general curriculum, students are given the opportunity to explore their own interests, abilities, and personal characteristics, and then compare themselves to others who have excelled in various fields. |

| Abstract |
This study was aimed at evaluating the performance of teachers of gifted and talented students in primary schools in Khartoum State, in light of international standards and the teachers’ experience. It evaluated their performance and measured their intelligence. The study used a descriptive method for collecting data. The total population of 58 teachers was studied. Two tools were applied for data collection: the Questionnaire of the Committee of Experts and the Standard Progressive Matrices. The result showed that the teachers’ performance was generally evaluated as very good. It also showed that practical experience had no effect on the performance of the teachers of different subjects. The average rate of teachers’ intelligence was medium. Finally, some proposals and general recommendations to enhance the efficiency of teachers’ performance were obtained. |

| Abstract |
The aim of this research was to explore emotional intelligence and its relationship with some variables among the gifted children of the schools associated with the Ministry of Education in Khartoum State. The research tools included a primary information list and emotional intelligence inventory designed by the researcher. The results indicated that the gifted children were characterized by higher emotional intelligence; there was a positive correlation between emotional intelligence and academic attainment in mathematics; no significant gender difference was found in emotional intelligence among the children; there was no correlation between emotional intelligence and parents’ educational level; and no correlation was found between emotional intelligence and the chronological age of the gifted children. Recommendations and suggestions for future research will be presented. |

| Abstract |
Both acceleration and enrichment have proven their effectiveness as measures for promoting the education of gifted students, but both also bring about some problems. Acceleration is not always possible, due to legal problems. Besides, attitudes of some teachers and parents concerning acceleration are still rather negative. Enrichment courses need to be of high quality to be beneficial and bear monetary costs for parents or schools. Frühstudium is an enrichment and acceleration measure at German universities for students from secondary schools, which avoids some of these limitations. Students participate in selected university courses and thus save time in their future courses of study and enrich their knowledge in several fields. This study presents an evaluation of Frühstudium at the University of Koblenz. Results have shown that the measure is highly accepted by the students. Problems are mainly caused by the schools, which, obviously, do not support their students sufficiently. |

Eriksson | Paper | Redefining Giftedness within a Contemporary African Context

| Abstract |
An ethnographic study was conducted in South Africa that examined how concepts of high-ability students have taken on an African perspective. As Africa searches for a continental identity through the African Union, efforts to identify and develop future leaders have emerged. Advocates of gifted education have decried its omission in African Governmental Education Departments. New constitutions have been designed to be inclusive and to prevent discrimination based on race and class, rejecting forms of separatism. Past programs for gifted and talented students were viewed as assimilation to an elitist and Eurocentric definition, divorced from the realities and injustices of inferior education that marginalized students’ experiences. This study included interviews, a review of data, and field research in schools that develop excellence and leadership with underserved high-ability students. Ethnic concepts of giftedness that emerged and the results of an advocacy group established to redefine giftedness will be shared. |

| Abstract |
Eyre’s English Model is a theoretical template for making gifted education an integral part of general education systems. This session looks at the main components of the model and outlines ways in which it has been used as the basis of schemes in different countries to meet the demands of differing cultures and education systems. The session will consider how, by highlighting themes that are common to all education systems and schools, the model can be customized to help meet the needs of learners in a variety of contexts and in regions as diverse as the Far East, the Middle East, and Europe. The paper will consider why countries choose to focus on gifted education and discuss the merit of integrated models. |
